1961 Signed Mystery Plate - Scandanavian Name on Pottery Mark:- Based on some context clues, I have reason to believe that this plate originates in Sweden, but that could be very, very wrong.

We have something interesting and unusual as far as the other plates I have seen, in that it has a year (Wow!), and the only mark on the back is a signature. The name in the signature is another story entirely: ****git Carlsson. Even that much might not be right, but it is close.

Now, this could be work of an independent potter. However, the gold signature seems to have been done with, at least, some higher quality materials.

I find the center design of some flowers basically commonplace, but I like the border quite a bit.

Can anyone point me in the right direction about who this might be, if indeed, it is anyone noteworthy at all. If it turns out not to be (which is a pretty good bet), I guess I will have to look at Swedish names beginning with I, A, M, and N, which are some possibilities for the first letter in the first name, but not the only possibilities! Carlsson is a much safer bet than Carlssom, but also not impossible!

1961 Signed Mystery Plate - Scandanavian Name on Pottery Mark

Hi Richard

Thanks for your submission. I think we are looking at the work of an amateur artist from the great era of 'china painting' in the late 19th Century/early 20th Century. This hobby/craft was very popular at the time and many thousands became quite proficient at it. People took whiteware and decorated and fired it. It was the era before TV, movies, x-box and the dreaded Wii.

The word 'quite' it thinks sums up this piece. It is very pleasant, of course, but when you see professional ceramic artists at work they quite simply take your breath away.

I watch the world famous hand painters of Royal Worcester at work on a regular basis (the old factory of Worcester now being defunct, the current artists now operate from a unit in Staffordshire). Had any one of the people I know painted this floral still life, the finished result would be a world away from what's on your plate.

You piece is likely antique, but I fear we might never know the identity of the artist - lost in the mists of time. Probably American, despite the name, I feel.
