Antique China Fine Ornate Blue and Gold Gilt Vase With Small Hand Signed Gold Cursive 'T' Device:- This belongs to a friend of mine and it has been handed down through the family for at least 4 generations. It is in wonderful condition and is a rather large double handled vase. The only mark is a gold T...at least we think it is a T.

We suspect this is an early European piece of pottery but don't know for sure.

Can anyone help identify the origin and maker of this?

Hi Carole

Lovely old vase. Many thanks for submitting, and hope you are finding the site a useful landing place for research and information.

Now not being an expert myself, I can't say any details for sure, but I think this does look early. The question an expert would be able to answer is to place whether this piece is Staffordshire or Continental and also to tell you about the decoration technique.

There will be a name for this layering of paste in decorative swirls. I think this might be described best as 'enamelling'. Enamelled decoration is normally done overglaze in piped lines, and you can see and feel the contours quite clearly as in your vase. I may be corrected on the name of this technique of the period by an expert, so don't quote me.

An expert would also tell you the value in todays market and give an indication of quality - that is, if this item is porcelain or earthenware. It looks more like earthenware than porcelain to me.
