Antique China Hexagonal UN-MARKED Plate with Thistle and Fine Decoration:- I recently inherited this plate and was told it is rare. I have scanned through English Tin Glaze and Delftware sites and have come up empty.

The plate is unmarked. It is made of biscuit colour clay, equilateral six (6) sides and 9½" across the flats. I am sure it is tin glaze and because it depicts a thistle I am inclined to think it may be of Scottish manufacture. It has no chips nor restoration, and help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have attached pictures.

Thank you,

Graham Page

Antique China Hexagonal UN-MARKED Plate with Thistle and Fine Decoration

Hi Graham

Many thanks for submitting your lovely looking old plate. Great pictures too. Hope you are finding the site useful as a resource.

Not being an expert, I can't give you a definitive reply, but I know enough to know whoever told you this was old and rare was most probably spot on. This in my humble view is a stunningly beautiful item and it is true art in ceramic form. Everything about it is pleasing.

The thing is, I can't tell you where it stems from or the period, but an expert could. So unless a knowledgeable contributor finds this post and helps you, I suggest a trip to you local auction house to get it checked out for sure, as an old rare plate like this may carry a value (not a fortune, but certainly worth having).

If this is hard for you, then consider an online appraisal, but make sure 1. You are guaranteed a quality answer BEFORE you buy any credits or pay any money upfront, 2. Don't go for the cheapest option, because you get what you pay for (been there, done it, regretted it) 3. Consider the expert liaison service I began on behalf of the visitors to this forum - it represents the best value online there is (I would say that, but many who have used it vouch for that 100%).

Best regards
