Antique & Fine China Collectibles Query - is it from china?:- I'm trying to ID my moms old tea set, i believe its hand painted with gold around the rims and the sides. I also suspect it is fine bone china as I can hold It up to the light and see me fingers. other than that I can see no visible marks underneath. The set purchased in upstate New York, US from a yard sale around 1980's.

Antique & Fine China Collectibles Query - is it from china?

Hi Mike

Many thanks for submitting, and hope you are finding the site useful. This service is an unknown quantity to me. I am more an English china enthusiast (notice I didn't say 'expert').

When I look at this set, I feel sure it isn't English. The simplistic pattern makes it look hand-painted to me rather than transfer ware - but hard to confirm without handling.

If it isn't English it definitely is not bone china. It has the slightly grey hue of porcelain.

Could it be continental (European)? Possibly, yes, but one would expect it to be marked as I don't feel it is that old (likely 1950's). Could it be Japanese? Possibly yes. Could it be Chinese? I have never seen export items quite like this from China, but is possible.

If it is European or Japanese, why is there no makers mark? Answer - it is either very old (unlikely) or very modern and cheap & cheerful mass production. My guess is the latter, but I could be wrong.

Difficult to pick this one.

Best regards

Thanks Peter for trying to ID my set. I have been trying for awhile online. with no luck. perhaps its time to bring it in somewhere to a shop for a proper look.
