Antique Fine China Porcelain Pedistal Dish with painted cherubs Marked D in the middle of crossing L's :- I helped an older lady out doing varies things around the house. She was quite well off and had many nice vases and pictures. She gave this to me in about 15 years ago. I thought it might be of some value so its been wrapped up and stored away in a box since I got it.

Thanks,

Howard

Antique Fine China Porcelain Pedistal Dish with painted cherubs Marked D in the middle of crossing L's

Hi Howard

Interesting item indeed! I can tell you from my own knowledge (I am no expert in these matters, remember) that your dish has the mark of a genuine item from early Sevres, and if this is the case, it has quite a value.

I have had similar pieces come through my expert liaison service, some of which are real and some of which are reproductions. It needs a keen expert eye to determine the origin from photos and I can assure you, my expert contacts are the very best. There was a fashion in the late 19th Century for early items to be reproduced - and these still have a fair value as they are genuine antiques in their own right.

For appraisal and valuation advice a full market report, go here:

My vintage and antique china values page

The trick of the expert is knowing, just from photographs which is real and which is reproduction, or not of the era depicted. I am afraid, without putting your item in front of experts, I can’t tell you whether yours is a reproduction or genuine, or whether it is of high quality or low, whether it is collectible or not collectible.

However, it does have a very genuine look to it to my eye and the provenance is also a very good indicator.

If you want to save money and not pay for a report, my suggestion to you is to either physically go with your pot to your nearest auction house in person for a free assessment or, if this is difficult, go to the websites of the big international auction houses, many of which claim to have a free email appraisal system (if you dig deep enough into their websites).

I have tried one or two of these services and they do sometimes eventually answer after a month or so. Then the value might not be forthcoming, but at least you will know the relative quality of your item.

Otherwise, if you can get the money together, let me know and I will send off your photos to my team of experts.

If not, knowledgeable contributors please try to help with this one (check out the comments section below for replies).
