British Registration Diamond (Kite) Mark & Numbers 1841-1883

British Registration Diamond (Kite) Mark & Numbers 1841-1883:- hi, The mark above in your titled "Look for pottery clues" is the one I am looking for and trying to identify. It is on the right side-fourth down from the top...it has the R in the center of a square with the IV at top. I have one that is quite similar only the small numbers on the sides are different. It is a Prince Albert Consort memorial pitcher...Please, tell me who this mark belongs to, so I can get more info on my pitcher.

Thanks so much,

Zita Church

Hi Zita

Nice query and photo. Thanks. The diamond kite mark is not the manufacturers mark but the British Registration mark introduced in 1841. Your piece is OLD (April 1862).

Your mark is from the first 1842 to 1867 version (see top left photo). The top mark 'a' refers to the category (in this case category 'iv' which is obviously ceramics). The 'b' is where the year code is shown (in your mark this '0' which is 1862). The 'c' denotes the month (in your piece it is 'H' meaning April). The 'd' shows which day the registration is effective from. The 'e' shows the batch number.

From 1868 the place where these details are itemized changes to those shown in the top right hand side photo.

Anyone needing to decode their ceramic registration pottery marks can go to the registration pottery mark decoding page of www.pm&m.com (opens a new window).

Hope this helps
