Bronze and Ceramic parrot candlesticks Possibly By 'H & W' aka Hancock and Whittingham:- Bronze and Ceramic parrot candlesticks. These have the marks on the ceramic underside of a crown above crossed swords or scepters, the letter H (or could be a horse) to the left and W to the right and the number A866 below. The bronze also has the same mark stamped on the bronze although there is looks more like 1866 for the number.

I can't find a maker with the initials HW. Any suggestions?

Dear Reina

You may need an expert, here's why:

Not a well known mark. It is the worse possible combination of marks to identify on a smaller lesser known maker. Crown marks run in their thousands as do crossed swords and sceptres (homage to Meissen, the original originals). A letter you can't identify doesn't help and if it was an H - this letter is one of the most common letters of the alphabet for makers names.

No pressure then!

Here's what I dug up:-

There is a small H & W entry in Goddens for a short lived maker called Hancock and Whittingham of the Bridge works Stoke (1863 - 1879) who made earthenwares and had various grand devices on their pottery marks of which only one example is shown (not the crown & swords you describe).

The wares are extremely rare and I found only one item for sale on Ebay - a jug with a buy-it-now price of $125 USD See example above). Hopefully, you wares are, in fact, 'H & W' - Hancock and Whittingham!

H & W did a lot of mixing of material. Normally pewter and earthenware (not bronze). They sourced their pewter from Stoke makers T. Booth, a pewterer in Hanley, another town in the same district of England.

Sounds like them, doesn't it?

Check out how to search efficiently on my China Replacement page.

Hope this helps and happy antiquing!
