Caulfield and Co, Glasgow with CHAPMAN Mark

Caulfield and Co, Glasgow with CHAPMAN Mark:- I have some cups saucers, side plates and dinner plates marked Caulfield and Co, Jamaica Street Glasgow with CHAPMAN RD429488 imprinted on them. Some have P 3314 in red. Could these items have been produced by the Chapman China company?

Hi Annette

Strictly speaking a photo of the mark needed to be included and it's best to merge two or more clear photos into one and then upload.

However, the query about Caulfield and Co, Glasgow is an interesting one as it flags up an area not before touched upon within the site - that of Scottish pottery. Now Goddens, the 'bible' of UK potteries does not mention Caulfield and Co at all which suggests it is either a retailer, not a maker or a small decorating factory making wares for local interest. I checked on ebay and did find a listing mentioning the Caulfield and Co factory, and the wares were depicting local beauty spots, which suggest the latter. If you have local knowledge, you may know if there is (or was) a well known Glasgow retailer on Jamaica Street called Caulfield and Co.

A local decorating factory might well have sourced bone china whiteware from a specialist Stoke maker like Chapmans, as there are too many expensive resources needed to set up yourself, unless you have minimum volumes guaranteed.

Interesting query, thank you.

Caulfield and Co, Glasgow Retailers
by: Annette Allison

I have discovered that Caulfield and Co had a China Hall at 68 Jamaica Street, Glasgow and were retailers for many of the top names in china production. It would be interesting to know if Chapmans produced wares for them.

Caulfield and Co, Glasgow Retailers

Well done for researching locally and finding the answer that, as I suspected, Caulfield and Co were a Glasgow retailer of china and glass.

I imagine that, almost certainly, Chapmans (bone china specialist of repute) would have produced 'own brand' contract manufacturing for an important local china retailer such as Caulfield. The mark on your wares, is, in fact very good physical evidence of this. Great work!

There would have been various Stoke makers vying for contract business with local retailers, so I would imagine Chapmans were not the only supplier of 'own brand' to Caulfield.

It may have been, if the ebay listing can be believed, that Caulfield also decorated some whitewares locally. If you could, again do some local asking around, that would be great. Do any of the older folk remember a decorating plant or factory or workshop or kiln bank associated with Caulfields?

I have a set of rope pattern dinner plates soup plates and side plates and several ashets all marked

F caulfield & Co 68 Jamiaca street Glasgow they are wedgewood as they are embossed as such . My family were involved around 1870/80 in retailing china ware n Glasgow and I suspect therefore with Caulfield although this was not their name.

Further Caulfield Info

Hi Peter,
i recently found in my house a Glasgow newspaper dated 1885 with a large box ad announcing closing down sale of F Caulfield and goods to be sold at " Salvage" prices . so that is when Caulfields I think disappeared.

Hi John

This is truly inspirational detective work. Many thanks for the last two postings. I love the way this website uncovers and records this type of information, possibly not readily available anywhere else. Thanks for taking the time and trouble!

Caulfield & Co

I have one set of trio with violet pattern form second hand shop and interested in the back ground of the company so I searched and I hit this page also the gazette dating in 16 Dec 1892. It has been stating the company has been dissolved of mutual consent on 1st Dec 1892 by the retail of subscriber Francis Caulfield. However the subscriber Thomas Alexander Jebb, the remaining partner, who has acquired right to the whole assets and will discharge the whole liabilities of co-partnership, will continue to carry on the business for his own behoof at the same address and same name. So somehow they kept their business after closing down sale and under different administrator they continued their business beyond 1892.
