Chemical Porcelain Pottery Mark on Grainger & Co Worcester Plate:- Hello, My husband has just rescued this plate from being thrown in a skip!! I have been looking on the internet and on this site to find out what I can. Someone else on this site also had a back stamp like the one on the back of our plate but was in red and ours is in green.
Also under the back stamp if you look very carefully there appears to be some numbers (may be wrong??) embossed into the plate. My husband thinks it could be a 'W' but I think numbers!!
I cannot find this design anywhere?? I think it is lovely, a very pretty plate. Something else we cannot agree on is whether it is hand painted or just a print??
If anyone could throw any light onto this for us with regards to date or even know if it is genuine we would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Gina

Chemical Porcelain Pottery Mark on Grainger & Co Worcester Plate
Hi Gina
Good work by your husband I would say. Grainger & Co was a Worcester firm staffed by ex Worcester Porcelain (Royal Worcester) employees - founded in 1801. Such was the quality of their work that in 1889 Worcester brought them back into the fold, only closing down the separate Grainger unit and bringing the staff into the main site in 1902. So really, Grainger Worcester can be thought of as being a form porcelain manufacture very closely allied to Royal Worcester, but with its own series of marks.
Your mark with the "Chemical Porcelain" label dates from the period 1850 - 1870. Grainger itself dates from 1801 as Granger Wood & Co, then from 1812 - 1839 as Grainger Lee & Co, and finally George Grainer & Co from 1839 - 1902.
Lucky your hubby saved this plate because, if sold, you would probably have enough money to treat yourself to an expensive meal in a nice restaurant with the proceeds. I don't normally talk about value in this section as this is a subject best left to
expert antique appraisers, however, I know enough to know Grainger Worcester does tend to fetch good money.
