Clay Sculpture Techiques Applies to Soap Moulding (Molding)

by Naomi
(USA)

Hello, I have a question about how to make a soap mold. I have an idea about making soap on a rope. The custom molds I need to make are as follows:

Buddah, Moses, Muhammad, Krishna, Joseph Smith, Abraham, Virgin Mary Jesus and Poseidon.

There is already a Jesus on a Rope Soap on the market, I am looking to make these molds similar to that one. The link provided will show you somewhat what I am looking to do.

I would like the prophet soap molds to be 3-4 inches tall only.

Can you give me some suggestions on how I can make these, or if I can pay someone to make them for me.

Thank you very much

Naomi

Dear Naomi

Great initiative, you go for it!

However, I am not at all sure about soap making moulds. Only if you were making ceramic moulds, could I help. Even though I can make plaster moulds, I employ a mould maker (called a ‘blocker’), because with fine bone china figurines, there no room for error or amateur attempts. Do some further research online or in libraries, or at your local market where there is a soap seller.

Naomi's reply:-

Do you know of any blocker I can contact for guidance? I am thinking that I will need to make the small statues, and from them I can make a silicone mold. A lot of the soap molds used are made from silicone.

A silicone mould is the easiest thing to do.

Source some silicone

Put your model in a leak-proof container

Pour in the rubber

Allow to fully cure

Remove the mould from the container

Make a careful cut or two in the silicone enough to release the original model

Surround the rubber block with panel supports to help retain its original shape (or use the original container if you did not have to destroy it to remove the mould – this depends on the original container – you can use the same panel supports as the original container if you can get your head around how to do this without it leaking)

Pour in the soap.

Easy!
