Dog and Tree Vase Figurine {edited to add:- "in the Style of a Staffordshire Flatback}:- We recently began helping my parents clear out some cabinets to prepare for a move to a retirement village. Among the things found is an old figurine that includes a dog lying beside a tree, and the tree has an opening in the top like a small vase. We cannot find any markings of any kind. My mother remembers it from her childhood (born 1930) on the East Coast. This piece was very important to her mother and always displayed in a special spot, but she does not recall why. She said she always thought it not very attractive, but her mother loved it for some reason.

I am hoping someone can help us identify its approximate age, where it may have originated, and if it has any value.

Approx dimensions (as viewed from front):
5-1/4"W, 5-3/4"H, 3"D.

Photos attached.

Thank you for your help.

Your Staffordshire dog
by: KathyS

Hi, Your piece is from the Staffordshire potteries, which were the powerhouse of pottery production in the U.K. in the 1700-1800's. You are correct in identifying it as "in the style of Staffordshire flatback" as those same potteries produced the flatbacks during the same time period. In contrast to a "flatback", your Staffordshire figurine is "in the round". It is a spill vase. I would guestimate a date of about 1840-1860 but I will leave the precise date to others more conversant in the field. Value is very dependent on condition, I have one very similar to your piece (I am a collector) which is in mint condition w/no restoration, for which I paid $150.00 recently.
