Green Crown Pottery Mark Query - Rosaria or Roseria or Rossria or Rossina:- This tea set belonged to one of my Grandmothers. I know nothing about it except it's been in a storage box for many years. The tea pot is 7 1/2 " tall. The stamp is extremely smudged and blurry.

Green Crown Pottery Mark Query - Rosaria or Roseria or Rossria or Rossina

Hi Cheryl

My first thoughts about this set was that it looks Japanese. I can't say why, just the pattern and the shape styling. There is a pattern by a Japanese maker 'Empress China' - called "Rosaria" but is is not the same pattern as yours - and it appears the word Rosaria on your stamp is referring to a brand name rather than a pattern name.

If it is Japanese, I don't know why there isn't a country of origin on the backstamp. All imports to the US after 1890 needed a country of origin. At first, Japanese good had the word 'Nippon', then later the US powers insisted on 'Japan' because people did not know what Nippon meant.

I think the word on your mark is Rosaria and my guess is it is of Japanese origin, but I may be wrong on that. The Japanese are famous for making up random names for marks for no particular reason (or reasons known only to themselves). But... why no country of origin? Is this set before 1890? Doubtful....
