Has anyone heard of Royal Tuxedo? - Antique Bone China Query: I found a set of plates with a brown mark and the words "Finest English Bone China Made In England" curved over the top of the mark and "ROYAL TUXEDO HAND DECORATED" curved under the mark. Has anyone heard of Royal Tuxedo? Do they go by another name or is this an offshoot of a larger company?

Dear Erika

Thanks for your mysterious query. We need your photos. I uploaded a photo of Lenox Tuxedo pattern for your information (courtesy of Replacements.com)

The pottery mark "Royal Tuxedo" bone china, made in England, is a new one on me. It is undocumented in any books on UK bone china that I have, and unheard of anywhere on the net. Therefore it could be the trade name used by a retailer or distributor, otherwise it must either be very modern or very small or obscure maker.

On further investigation I discovered there is a pattern of the famous American firm Lenox, called 'Tuxedo' of which there are 16 different variations listed on Replacements.com (go to my page called China Replacement and follow the link to Replacements.com to view the patterns and register your own "Royal Tuxedo" for reference and help in identifying.

Then go back to my China Replacement page, follow the specially coded link to ebay and save a search with the words "Royal Tuxedo". The instructions on how to do so can be found on my China Replacement page.

Lenox Tuxedo China was introduced as early as 1912, and is a classic Lenox pattern. I was thinking that Lenox might have, at one time, introduced a special UK edition called "Royal Tuxedo" which they had made in England in bone china. However, this is unlikely because, somewhere online this edition would be showing up somewhere or other. If this were the case your wares would be rare and valuable. The only way of checking it out definitively is to use the services of an expert appraiser.

Hope all this helps with your research!
