Is This An Japanese Artist Mark? Query

Is This An Japanese Artist Mark? Query:- This mark is on a Japanese vase that I've owned for many years. The red ink leads me to think occupied Japan but have also been told that this could be a studio piece.
Any info would be very helpful....

Hi Steve

Thanks for your submission.

It would have been great to see a picture of the vase also. May I take this opportunity to gently remind visitors that they need to be able to merge photos of the mark and the piece into one image to accompany their submission. This really helps us to give you the fullest possible answer in this public forum.

Here is the submission form for this public pottery marks forum for those wanting a shortcut to the ‘submit form’.

If anyone needs to know what a merged image should look like take a peek at Patrick's J M mark submission - it's a great example of providing as much visual information as possible.

(If you don't know how to merge photos, you can use my photo-merge service).

Getting back to the query, I'm afraid oriental wares are very much a specialist area and outside my field of knowledge. You would have to ask an expert china appraiser to find out more, or hope that a passing oriental ware specialist leaves a comment below.

You could also try gotheborg.com, who specialise in oriental marks.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Pottery Mark Meaning - 'Shiramine' (a family name) in Japanese
by: peterp

The mark, which is upside down, by the way, seems to be Shiramine, in Japanese. This is a common family name and place name. Do not know more, but further research could start from here.
