Lusterware set unidentifiable mark

by Roger
(Sweden)

I was looking for an answer to a mark - "S in a house" and found a matching description here, http://www.figurines-sculpture.com/lusterware-set-unidentifiable-mark.html
, but without a picture.
So now I'm sending a picture as a question to who the maker might be?

Regards

Roger Carlson

S inside a House Mark
by: Blake

Dear Roger,
According to Robert Rontgen's book "MARKS ON GERMAN BOHEMIAN & AUSTRIAN PORCELAIN" your mark is that of Schoenau Bros, aka Schoenau Brothers, of Huttensteinach, Thuringia, Germany & was used from 1900 to 1920.
I hope this helps. I will also post this information to the other site you listed in your post.

Yours, Blake

Additional Mark & Date Info
by: Blake

Dear Roger,
I just found a little more information. Bros was going through ownership changes during this period and another name for them during this time was Gebrüder Schoenau, Swaine & Co. Also, my source says that "the mark was registered at the Reichswarenzeichenregister (RWZR) as '#313 402' on April 15th, 1924 but was only used on tea sets before 1928. The company then switched to industrial and electrotechnical porcelain items (insulators, etc.).".
That should narrow the date down pretty well.

Yours, Blake

S in the House Makers Mark
by: K Maahs

I have the same Makers Mark on the bottom of a tea set. However, there is also a date stamped into the tea pot of 1941. So, can anyone tell me about the owners of my tea set?

I have a lunch and tea service set, Mother of Pearl Lusterware.

Hi

I looked up the marks based on Blakes info and found a different set of dates:-

I looked at various sources trying to piece together the history, as no one source had what I wanted.

One source said the the brand was apparently "Gebrüder Schönau" which was made by SWAINE & co. (1920-1954), based at Sonneberg in Thuringia. This source were showing a gold underglaze mark with the S mark inside a house shape, which was surrounded by a circle device (looking somewhat like an apple) with the word "Schoenau" underneath. Apparently, as far as I could make out as this was translated from the German, that after 1954 the maker became renamed as the 'VEB Sonneberger' porcelain factories.

Then another couple of sources explained a bit more that Swaine & Co were based at Hüttensteinach and Köppelsdorf in Thuringia, on the eastern side of the old 19th century Germany. Swaine were founded in 1854 but joined with Gebrüder Schoenau Co. in the 1920's. Schoenau had been established even earlier, in 1817 under the name Greiner und Künzel.

In the 1930's this merged firm apparently stopped making fine china and fancy wares and went into industrial widgets. This is where your date, 1941 does not tie up with these historical timelines, so please send me a photo so I can look at it and also upload it here.

The nationalised East German VEB Sonneberger closed in 1990.
