Mark Query on a Mantle Vase - Circle Lion and Crown :- I have a set of vases and I know that they are old, I would say before 1945 but I am not certain, I have looked for any info as to who made them or exactly how old they are, the only info I have is that it is marked from England and were probably purchased in New Orleans as they belong to my great Aunt. I have attached two pictures in hopes someone can tell me more about them. I have searched the internet seems as if they are called "Mantle vases" and that is the only information I have on them.

Lovely vase. This will be almost impossible to pin down the maker who used this mark due its very general nature. You can't look it up because there are over a thousand marks for general crown marks and similar for lion markings.

All one can say is likely Staffordshire is the region it emanates from. However, we have had equally difficult marks solved here, so don't give up hope altogether.

Lion & Crown Marks in General
by: The Forum Help Elf

Hi All

I decided to have a further look into those English china manufacturers who have used lions in combination with crowns.

As Peter says above, there are many thousands of marks using crowns and using lions, but when you start looking at the specific lion walking on all fours (i.e. NOT rampant) with a tail like a long curve and facing to the left, you start to narrow it down a bit.

Then, you narrow it down further still if you add in the crown device used in conjunction with the crown.

In fact, there are only 3 obvious ones in my books. They are Royal Doulton (who we can discount as I don't know of any marks of theirs which aren't catalogued). There is Colclough - the original HJ Colclough 1897 - 1937 used a similar style walking lion but this was inside a globe with a crown up top. Colclough marks are also pretty well documented from this Vale period, so I am doubtful if this mark is theirs.

Finally there is S Fielding & Co, originally of Devon (known as Crown Devon) who moved to Staffordshire in 1911. They did use a similar lion and a similar crown in their marks but normally with the initials S.F. & Co above and without the Laurel surround. Goddens, however, do state that there are other older Fielding marks reported which the author has not seen himself.

Could this be a little known variation of the lion and crown Fielding mark before they moved to Stoke and became known as Crown Devon and developed their range of earthenware art deco figures of pretty ladies? Answer, yes this is a possibility, but we would need the help of a Crown Devon/Fielding expert collector to verify or discount.

The final thing to look at is the wares themselves. To me, they don't look expensive and they look are rather lurid take off of the Vienna style without any of the finesse. Fielding were never a fine bone china maker and their deco figures are not so resistant to chips and cracking because they are made of non-vitreous pottery rather than high fired porcelains. Colclough were famous for taking high design ideals and making them accessible to ordinary people. Colclough had bone china plants and also earthenware too, so these wares would have been in their remit.

All in all, we still don't know about this mark. It might be neither of the contenders above and for all we know a very small and obscure maker, or made by a larger concern for a retailer or distributor using a special mark which never got catalogued.

However, I feel confident that one day soon we will nail this one.

I have a different vase with the same marking!
by: Anonymous

I have not found anything on this vase, but I have just got one with the same marking. Mine features a country scene with a shepherd and farm worker with three sheep. The inset is in a vague heart shape. Much of the gold has worn off the handle of the one that I have, but it is definitely the same marking.

I was happy to see your post! I will keep checking.

I do know that these vases where from a Great Aunt that was born just before 1900, they were probably gotten before her husbands death and that was before 1945/50, so I am guessing these were purchased between 1920 through 1945, I will post if I learn more, but like is stated above it is not likely. Thank you for your post. Seems as our vases are the same era.

Vase from England
by: Adlin

I also have looked for any info as to who made them or exactly how old they are. Also the ones i have are marked marked from England and they are just like the ones you have on the picture. They were given to me by a dear friend about 8 years ago before she passed away and she was 90 then. I would love to find out how much they are worth. If you happen to find out any more info on them please post and i will do the same.
