Mystery Pottery Mark - Egyptian Like Hieroglific Cartouche Backstamp
Mystery Pottery Mark - Egyptian Like Hieroglific Cartouche Backstamp:- I bought this vase at an Estate Sale in San Antonio, Texas in 2004. I have spent at least 20-30 hours over the years since trying to identify the mark with no success.
The vase has a lusterware body, cream color top with a beige bottom separated by a ring of flowers. The vase measures 8-3/4" tall and approximately 6-1/4" in diameter at widest. The vase is marked with what looks like an Egyptian Cartouche with Hieroglifics inside in a rounded end rectangle on the base over what looks like " mar a" over "stud" with letters missing in between. Inside the rectangle are numerous symbols including a vase or urn, a bird a profile of a head etc.
I tried searching by guessing that the "stud" part of the mark could be part of Studio but that didn't lead anywhere. I thought the vase might be of English origin and searched British marks thoroughly. A couple years ago I sent pictures of the vase and mark to David Rago of Rago's auctions. He wrote that he thought the vase might be Japanese. I have searched all the Japanese pottery marks I can find on the web and in my numerous books also without result.
Any ideas as to maker, country of origin etc. would be a great help. Thank you for your time and assistance.
Sincerely,
Blake Awbrey

Hi Blake
We meet at last! Thanks for sharing your query. You have been very kind in bestowing your knowledge to other visitors and many many thanks for that kindness.
Now, I know that you know your stuff and if you are foxed, and David Rago is foxed, then we must have some foxy problem on our hands!
You have understood how this public forum works and have merged & uploaded your photos into one image perfectly. Here is a reminder of the
submission form for this public pottery marks forum just in case any passing visitors need it (gives a convenient shortcut for those wanting a shortcut to the ‘submit form’).
Even though your problem mark was such a foxy one, I looked for your mark anyway in my various pottery mark encyclopaedias, but, of course, found nothing like it.
Let's leave this submission up in the hope either, someone else comes across this listing who knows, or alternatively, we find a reply and can post it here.
Best regards,
