Need help identifying asian writing marks on rice bowls
Need help identifying asian writing marks on rice bowls:- I have five small bowls with blue asian writing on the bottom of each one. I do not know if it is Chinese or Japanese writing. The bowls are light green inside with a white trim. On the outside of the bowls are raised paintings of flower trees in red and yellow, gold vase with diamond patterns and flowing streams of water set in a blueish green back ground. The bowl is so small that it can fit in one hand. I purchased the set at an estate sale in 2008.

Need help identifying asian writing marks on rice bowls
Hi Minerva
Many thanks for submitting, and hope you are finding the site useful. Personally I can't read Chinese writing (this bowl looks more like Chinese Famille Rose than Japanese Satsuma - but I an no expert, so don't take my word for it).
Let's hope a friendly and knowledgeable visitor reads this thread and helps out.
Otherwise, your could use the
"Bring in the pottery mark experts service" located here.
People wanting to know more about the bigger picture of Chinese and Japanese markings should go to this page:-
My article on oriental / asian porcelain and it's valuation criteria (be sure to scroll down to the comments section where the article is located).
The article explains how pottery and porcelain marking in the East differs from that of Western culture. The main difference is we expect, in a very practical sense, the marks to primarily identify maker, date and pattern (or style). However, Eastern cultures do not have this same criteria. Marks are more often about things esoteric rather than practical identifications - for example, references to past periods in ceramic history and about the person receiving the wares and motifs of good luck, good energy, prosperity and the elements etc etc.
Read the article and see what I mean. However, should you just want a literal translation, please await responses below.
For those interested in valuing and researching a bit more for themselves, I have written several other pages of information which I hope you might find useful...
