Blue Oriental writing inside a circle pottery mark on small blue & white lidded tankard:- This was found in a box of odd china, glassware and ceramic junk that my brother-in-law brought to the house. He often hauls junk for people and he often brings me electronic odds and ends, since I am a computer engineer. Why he thought I would know much about ceramics is another mystery.

To the point at hand...

Most of what he gave me is easily identified as Noritake, Sheffield, etc. This piece, however, is a complete unknown to me. The markings on the bottom are quite extensive, much more than I am used to seeing on ceramics.

This may be obvious to an experienced eye, but I have no clue.

Bill

Blue Oriental writing inside a circle pottery mark on small blue & white lidded tankard

Hi Bill

Your brother-in-law obviously trusts your systematic and mechanistic engineer's brain to deliver a methodical approach to all matters - including fancy china and pottery trinkets.

You obviously have both class and aplomb because you found this website and used the facilities to post a query.

The question is - do I have an answer to hand?

Well, actually, no, not to oriental marks, not my thing.

However, all is not lost, take a look at the specialist website Gotheborg.com and see if you can see your mark there.

Please report back.

If anyone can help, please post below.

Blue Circle Pottery Mark with Chinese Caligraphy inside
by: Graham

This blue circle pottery mark with Chinese caligraphy inside says as follows:-

"Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi" meaning "Great Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, Made". The item looks to be typical blue & white Chinese export porcelain and of course not from the period stated but likely the 20th century.

Many examples of this type of faux Qianlong markings come in the form of a square red seal mark. This one is rather more unusual in that it is a blue circle.

More than that it is hard to say.
