i searched for weeks for anything resembling this, and the closest thing i found was the Satsuma mark, only it is a red mark.the vases are octagonal, 5.5 inches tall,2.2inches wide, and the scenery portraits are the same but reversed on each, except th clothing worn by the figures is different.
thanks again so much,

To oriental pottery mark query

Hi Chris

Sorry your computer crashed on you - we like the full story. Otherwise a perfect submission.

The oriental marks are not my bag, I suggest a quick visit to gotheborg.com. They are the total specialists in oriental marks.

Otherwise, we quite often get visitors in the know post comments to solve these types of mystery, however, it can take a while.

I am a mere artisan who makes bone china figurines, but try to help the best I can.

Big thanks to Scott who posted a reply in the comments section (see link at bottom of page).

To summarize, Scott says it's Japanese Satsuma indicated by the crackle glaze, the dotted decoration called moriage (not unique to Satsuma - just a pointer) and finally the mark - above the mark is a red circle denotes the Shimazu family - the mark below possible being Hododa. Maybe dates from around 1900.

Certainly enjoy all the free resources and online guides, but if you want an insurance valuation or are thinking of maybe selling your stuff at sometime in the future and want to get the best possible price, I recommend you get a certified appraisal – it particularly helps on ebay where people are not able to inspect the items, and therefore have to take your word for it.

Q. “HOW do I get one of those?!!”

A. By far the quickest, easiest & cheapest way is to contact Whats-it-Worth. I am happy to put my name to them as an affiliate.

China Appraisals and Authentication Online

You can also purchase short online courses. They are the top online experts and very friendly.

If not selling but want an idea of price, go to my Valuation Help Page.

HERE'S A TOP TIP IF SELLING ON EBAY:-

A mistake many people make when trying to sell wares on Ebay is not to upload a photograph of the pottery mark.

Serious buyers will ALWAYS want to see the mark before buying. To save yourself hassle, the best way to ‘photograph’ the mark so as to give collectors the best view is to place the item on a scanner and ‘scan’ the pottery mark. This almost always gives a better result than a photograph (you see lots of blurred photos on ebay from sellers who could do with this tip!)

That tip is courtesy of friend of the site, Terry Gibbs who runs a private ebay forum which gives a lot of useful tips for eBay sellers. There is a small charge to join - to pay for the admin & upkeep (quite right too!). I am proud to be an affiliate of Terry's (he IS Jeff Albertson the 'Comic Book Guy' from the Simpsons! LOL! - don't tell him I said that).

I hope this helps you with your very nice item.

Best regards
