Oriental Pottery Mark - Two Handled Vase with Oriental Lettering and Peony Painting:- Hi, We are trying to identify a pottery mark on the bottom of an 80cm tall Oriental vase, with a painted peony on both sides. Two handles come up either side, and there is a base on the bottom which is held in place by a screw and a square nut.

There are 2 characters on the base which we are looking to identify (see picture). I'm not even sure which orientation they are meant to have.

The vase was bought at auction circa 1950's by a family member and I have inherited it.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

George

Oriental Pottery Mark - Two Handled Vase with Oriental Lettering and Peony Painting

Hi George

Many thanks for submitting, and hope you are finding the site useful. This vase looks to have some age and value to my eye.

Apart from that, I'm a bit stumped on this one. The style is European baroque, but the painting somehow doesn't look Oriental.

It could well be Japanese, but made for the domestic market, not for export tastes, which is why the mark is in native calligraphy.

Probably not Chinese origin
by: Antiquegirl

Hi George,

This vase does not look like it's of Asian origin at all. The characters in the bottoms look stamped on and may not be any Asian language. I think you're mistaken. Also, I don't think people use the word oriental anymore.

Dear AG

Many thanks for your contribution. However, I do not share your view that the word 'Oriental' to describe historic and antique regional China from the Far East is out of date.

Here is a definition of the word 'Oriental' based on the entry in Wikipedia:-

The ideas of Occidental (West) and Oriental (East) stem from the Latin words "Occidens" which means 'setting', and "Oriens" meaning 'rising'.

Simply put, 'Oriental' is simply another word for the The Far East, but with regard to ceramic items has a connotation more particularly for antique or older wares, rather than modern items from that region. The word Oriental is an excellent word to use if you are unsure whether or not the items are of Japanese or Chinese origin. Personally, this is not my area, so I don't know, but I do have an expert referral service.

I also do not agree with you that the characters on the base are not Oriental in origin. I think they most certainly are - although I am not an expert in Chinese or Japanese calligraphy.
