Do you think this could say M Z?
If so it could be a mark of M Z Porcelain of Moritz Zdekauer, Altrohlau, Bohemia (a town now known as Stara Role, in the Czech Republic).
However, I have searched and searched through their marking both on and offline and as yet have been unable to find this mark at all.
Moritz Zdekauer, Altrohlau (MZ pottery marks) are normally associated with the double eagle mark and the letters MZ. They do have a couple of variations showing - namely one that appears to say CM-R, but really is supposed to be saying CMHR, meaning C.M. Hutschenreuter (another has the words MZ Hutschenreuter Altrohlau Czechoslovakia).
Nowhere at all can I see this mark which is very frustrating because, just by the look of this piece I can see it is quality, quality and more quality. So who is it?
It is in the style for the fashionable retrospective of the late 19th century, but the quality is so good, it could almost be from the actual earlier period.
As I say, the wares of the MZ company have quite a few marks with several variations with either M&Z, or MZ Austria and various crowns and graphic devices. They are known as Altrohlau Porcelain after the town in which they were founded.
They were founded in 1884 and were overtaken by the effects of the war around 1945. They are known to have made figural groups among other things, some of which show the intricate Dresden lace style on the ladies.
As I say, to me, your figural group looks to have some quality about it, both in the sculpting and the decoration, which to me indicates it would come from the earlier part of their output if it were theirs.
Please help us out if you known the maker of this lovely piece!
