Oval Impressed Pottery Mark - "John Peter Birmingham England":- I have two glazed earthenware busts I bought in India some years ago apparently from the clearance of a minor palace in Hyderabad. They are romanticised Muslim images. They have the mark "John Peter" and the words "Birmingham" and "England" above and below respectively.
Anyone know what I have?
Howard

Dear Howard
There are no known makers in my books called "John Peter Birmingham England". An indication of how widespread this name is will be shown up in this way:
People Google the keywords "John Peter Birmingham England" (or similar), they immediately find this website, once this new page is indexed, as there are no other sites showing this particular keyword phrase. As they find this thread, they make a comment. If no one finds this page, or makes a comment chances are this mark is very obscure and localized to the sub-continent.
I am glad you were able to add the pictures otherwise no one could have been able assess your wares, the style and quality of sculpting work, the general finish and the type of mark. They are quite intriguing. The art work and sculpting does not look contemporary to me and even if they were made relatively recently, I suspect the moulds are from a bygone era.
To get the best replies, submitters are best advised to upload two or more clear photos. A CLOSE UP of the mark (best use your camera on ‘macro’) and one of the wares is best.
I hope we can get some more info on these - please post via the comments link at the bottom of this page.
Anyone needing valuations only, please go to this

Hope this helps.
