Pottery Mark - N with a Laurel wreath

by Paul Fuller

Pottery Mark Query - N with a Laurel wreath:-
My father just passed away and left a range of Napoleonic figurines. 6 of them bear an N with a Laurel wreath around it in gold on the front of the plinth each stands on.

Any ideas who made them?

Paul

Dear Paul

Your figurines sound fascinating. Photos, please.

The only maker I could find who uses a laurel wreath and a crown is a small Italian maker of hand made flowers coming under the broad Capodimonte label called "Napoleon". Started around 25 years ago by an Italian sculptor, its registered trademark is the "N" and crown surrounded by a circular laurel wreath.

You didn't mention a crown so I doubt these are by the same maker.

Note to all visitors: please send in photos of both the pottery mark AND the item to stand a chance of getting a good answer on these pages. Priority is given to visitors who upload photos to accompany their submissions.

There is a mark of Nippon Yoko Boeki co. The "N" is in a circle incised and the mark is a black laurel wreath with a clover in the center, with japan underneath.

N with Laurel Wreath mark

Since the N with laurel wreath mark is on the front of the figurine (as opposed to the bottom), it probably refers not to the maker, but to Napoleon himself, the laurel wreath being a Napoleonic symbol.

Pottery Mark - N with a Laurel wreath. The comment about it being a decorative reference to Napoleon rather than a manufacturers pottery mark makes sense.
