Pottery mark query: backwards "R" only-no P or flames
by Melanie Steffler
As the pics show, the mark is raised in the pottery of a backwards r, and on the other side of the bottom is a number 102 stamped into the base. I have smudged charcoal over the R to make it visible which wipes off easily with water on a cloth. The vase is in perfect condition; no chips or scratches. It is 12.5" tall; 8.5" across the top rim;wit a 5"x5" square base.
It appears to have had a felt cover glued to the bottom at some time. It is an outstanding vase for flowers, but beautiful on it's own on a table or mantel. I am trying to learn which pottery company manufactured this vase.
I obtained this vase from the estate of a friend who had died at age 97! She was a New Yorker about town girl from the 1920's, when she was first married, through the 1990's. She traveled around the world and picked up treasures from places she visited and her collection of souvenirs was impressive.
She moved to San Diego, CA in the 90's to be closer to her grandson and his family. She lived in the elderly apartments that I was the manager for, and that is when we became friends. She was fascinating, and told me stories of her life at our weekly coffee clatches for all the residents.
She was a very elegant and sophisticated lady, which her designer clothes, jewelry and furnishings attest.
Everything she owned was expensive and stylish. Everyone in the apartments enjoyed her company and wonderful personality.
When she passed away, among 45 residents, 44 came to her memorial, along with their families.
