Pottery mark Query- Crossed Arrows, Points Down

Pottery mark Query- Crossed Arrows, Points Down. The arrow pottery mark in question has a mark of four feather tails, a letter on the left being the letter 'S' and to the right of that four numners 8534. This item was handed down to me from my Grandmother.

I would be very grateful for any information anyone could give.

Jim

Hi Jim

Thanks for sharing your arrow pottery mark.

It would have been great to see the actual item also. Here is the submission form for this public pottery marks forum. Please upload it there.

Your mark is exactly what Norine was asking about in the comments section on this page here (scroll to bottom of page):-

Arnart Hummel Look-alike Collectors Comments.

Your mark is one of many Germanic looking marks issued by Arnart, made in Japan figurine wares, mass imported into the USA and Europe. Arnart wares are very indicative of a time in the 1950's when Japan was finding it's feet as a manufacturer nation after the war. Japan were known at that time for cheap copies and lower priced goods. It was only after this period did they blossom as nation into the well respected industrial and technical giants we know today.

I have no idea what your piece looks like as there is no photo provided, so can't really comment any further.

As for values, people need to take into account the changing market in the current economy. Items fetching premium prices a couple of years ago are no longer, and other things becoming 'fashionable'. This is the realm of the experts and I have a special page where you get tips on researching china values and liaise with experts.

Best regards,

Your mark is a HOMCO mark

===================================

Peter Admin's reply:-

Thanks for this. As far as I am aware Arnart and Homco were part of the same Japanese export machine (but I may be wrong and this needs further evidence and citations). I am not sure who the characters were behind it - apparently Arnart had head offices in New York - right up until the year 2005 (or thereabouts) and they weren't averse to putting very flaky markings on their items which resembled old manufacturers marks. Is this fakery and forgery? Getting close, I would say.

In the 1700's, clever fakes trying to look like old Chinese wares were plentiful in England. Today these English reproductions are worth three times the amount of the wares they were ripping off. When the same thing happened in the 1800's these items are still considered fakes within the collectors market. So you may have to wait 300 years or so before your Homco and Artnart wares are worth anything!
