Pottery Mark Query - Elephant Pot - L C initials - Large "L" with smaller "C":- I found this somewhat ugly but also bizarrely fascinating clay pottery bowl at the thrift store today. The bowl is a brownish pottery piece, with rough exterior, and a smooth glazed blue on the inside. The lid is a huge, clay elephant's head. With tusks.

The only mark on it is on the side of the bowl, near the bottom. It's an imprinted uppercase "L" with a small "c" tucked into the "L".

Someone took a lot of care to add detail to the elephant's head. It has eyes, eyelids, wrinkles on its face, nostrils on its trunk, and a tongue and lower lip.

This thing was so ugly, and yet so detailed and therefore kind of beautiful. I felt compelled to buy it. But now I'm obsessed with finding out its history.

I've been looking all over the internet, googling "LC pottery mark" and "elephant head pottery", but the only thing I found was that Len Castle of New Zealand would mark his pieces with a similar "LC", but I can't find a record of him making an elephant piece like this. Although the brown with the blue glaze does seem like his style.

I know it's possible, too, that the piece is a manufactured piece for Ross or TJ Maxx or some other cheapo place. But it's REALLY heavy, and somehow I just don't think it's mass produced.

If anyone has any ideas about it, I'd love to hear them. This elephant is driving me crazy!
