Pottery Mark Query - 'J M' next to Cross on a Hill - Violin Player with Top Hat
Pottery Mark Query - 'J M' next to Cross on a Hill - Violin Player with Top Hat:- Violin Player with Top Hat found in hunting cabin in Rose City, Michigan, USA. The top is removable to store unknown item(s) on the inside.
Any help in identifying what the object is and its maker/origin would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Patrick
Thanks for an interesting pottery mark submission, perfectly executed with 3 merged images of the pottery mark and the item.
If all submissions were like your I would be very happy!
You have a very nice item, very collectable and also I suspect may have quite a financial value as well as novelty value.
You are the proud owner of a Johann Maresch piece. This factory is becoming increasingly collected. They made a range of wares showing a high quality of sculpture and modeling prowess, but became famous for their ubiquitous GARDEN GNOMES!
From a town called Aussig on the banks of the river Elbe, they started in 1841 in what was then Eastern Bohemia, later becoming part of Germany. The town is now called Ústí nad Labemunstarred being situated in the Czech Republic, very near the border with Germany and not far from Dresden.
Some very fine examples of their high quality sculptural ceramics fetch premium prices now.
Although I am not an expert (just an enthusiast who runs a website and works in the industry as a sculptor), I am quite good on 20th Century UK manufacturers. Foreign and early wares are mostly specialist niches unto themselves with vast amounts of knowledge and research material required, but I know about J M because of submission from my website visitors, so the learning is a two way process!
The thing to remember is, I don't ever do valuations myself, as this is an area for specialists only.
However, I have written a special page to help people learn how to get a real good idea of what their china wares might be worth.
www.figurines-sculpture.com/antique-china-values.html On this page I include links to a unique identification & valuation service which will allow you to see if the mark and value of the item is identifiable by professional experts without you having to pay any money upfront. This service is unique online and is designed to protect my site visitors from wasting their time and money online.
Best regards,
