Pottery Mark Query KIOTO over B.P. Co:- I have what looks like a large rectangle sugar bowl,

Registry mark on bottom has on top Roman numerals
IV,left side of diamond has a 1,right side has a K,

bottom has a R.Below Roman numerals IV is 22.Below
the diamond is K I'O T O, below K I'O T O is B.P.Co.

From this I figured it is earthenware made in 1883.

Any help will be grateful.

Thanks

Bill.
ps. I can send picture if necessary.

Peter (admin) says about "Pottery Mark Query KIOTO over B.P. Co"

Hello Bill

There are several china companies which show a BP pottery mark:-

    - B P & Co, Bovey Pottery & Co Devon c.1894-1957

    - B P & Co, Blyth Porcelain Co Ltd, Longton, c.1905-35 - Preceded by Dresden Porcelain

    - B P & Co, Bridge Products Co, Somerset, c.1954-63

    - B P & Co, Brownhills Pottery Co. Tunstall, c.1872-96

    - B P & Co Ltd, Britannia Pottery Co Ltd, Glasgow, c.1920-35

The only company to fit your date is Brownhills. Urgo.... you have your maker!

I happen to know the Brownhills Pottery Company of Tunstall had the "Kioto" pattern. Kioto was a classical oriental pattern type used by many manufacturers.

I would like to see a photo, just for interest, if you have time. I'll add it to this submission - just upload it on a new form and mark it "Kioto BP & CO Brownhills Photo".

Hope this gets you going in the right direction.

Maybe others might chip in with a bit more.

Thanks for your interesting query

Best regards

I have inherited a lovely soup tureen in the Kioto pattern which says both Royal Staffordshire and Wilkinson Ltd, England. Do you know anything about this sort of piece?
Many thanks,

KIOTO pattern on Royal Staffordshire and Wilkinson Ltd

Soup tureens keep their value well. If selling, you need to also flag up the connection between Clarice Cliff and her husband, Coley Shorter, who ran the Royal Staffordshire / Wilkinson Ltd firm, and you could be onto a winner. The BBC made an epic and famous drama/documentary TV series about this company and the two protagonists (who looked much better looking in the TV series than in real life).

In my online guide I talk about this firm in several different entries. Just put the words

"Royal Staffordshire and Wilkinson Ltd" into the in-house search - you will see 3 or 4 entries listed. Just take your time to read through the history.

BP co ltd
by: Phil

I have a small advertising saucer with bp co ltd
on the back, on the front it says- Binns Scotch
ivory pottery.
Probably nothing to do with what you are trying to
find out but just adds another name to your list.

Hi Phil

Many thanks for your input. All contributions are useful. I looked up Binns Scotch Ivory Pottery, but drew a blank....

However, I did find a company called Britannia Pottery which had a label called "Scots Ivory".

Is it possible you have misread the mark and it says something like 'Britannia (abbreviated) Scots Ivory Pottery'?

The Britannia Pottery was first established in 1856 in Glasgow by the Cochran family. They folded in 1935. Known originally as Cochran's, they later became Cochran and Fleming. It wasn't until the 1920's they became the 'Britannia Pottery'.
