Pottery mark Query- "Looks like a Z":- I got this plate at an auction. It is White with scroll work embossed on it. In the middle there is a picture of two little girls in long dresses, holding their bonnets. The plate is geen around the picture and gold edging. Now for my best description of the marking. Looks like a big V with a big Z over it. Could be vines or bones twisted around these letters. The marking is blue in colour.

Dear Ann Maree, You need to rotate the picture of the mark on your plate 90 degrees to the right. Your plate was made by William Kirkby & Co. of Fenton, Staffordshire, England. They were in only in business from 1879 to 1885 making both porcelain & earthenware for the Sutherland Pottery in Fenton. The company is fairly obscure so finding information on pattern names and values is not as easy as it normally would be for most Staffordshire potteries. This site does provide some information:

and running a Google search for William Kirkby & Co. produces several good leads.
I hope this helps.
Yours, Blake

Thanks Blake, I'm not the best photographer in the world, but this gives me a start on identifying this piece and valuing it.
Changing My Mind About Your Mark by: Blake
Dear Ann Maree, While researching another mark yesterday I ran across a couple marks that could also be the mark on your plate. One was a mark for Mavaleix/Granger a Limoges Porcelain company. Their marks usually would also have the words "Limoges France" or "France Depose" in the mark.
To be sure about the maker of your plate I need to see a picture of the mark that is larger and clearer than the one posted. If you can take a better picture*, I believe you can edit your original post and change the pictures. *(You might try setting the plate on a scanner in a dark room and scanning it. Sometimes this works very well for getting a close-up, detailed image.)If editing doesn't work, please do a new post with the same title as the first but add Part 2 to the end of the title.
