POTTERY MARKS - ALTHEA PATTERN ON FLOW BLUE or BLUE & WHITE CHINAWARE QUERY:-

Bought from a woman who has had this bowl in her family for at least 90 years. I want to give it to my sister for her birthday. I am having a hard time identifying the mark and finding other pieces in the pattern.

Can you help?

Hello

We were able to find the companies that made this Pattern (ALTHEA refers to a name derived from the Greek and means Wholesome or Healer). It turns out that only three (3) companies produced this Pattern during the 19thC, namely:
„h PODMORE, WALKER & Co
„h SAMUEL ALCOCK & Co., and
„h WOOD & BROWNFIELD

In this case, based on the style and other details of the mark, we are practically certain that your particular Flow Blue "Althea" Plate was made by Samuel Alcock & Co, located in Burslem, Staffordshire, UK, and dates ca 1830 - 1859.

Pottery Marks Answer - BLUE & WHITE ALTHEA. Many thanks to John at marks4antiques.com for a fine contribution to the site. This is typical of the type of pottery mark query which often crops up but needs china mark specialists such as yourself to answer in full.
