Sea Pottery Piece found on St. Kitts & Nevis
Sea Pottery Piece found on St. Kitts & Nevis:- Sorry but this is not about 'wares'. Only a piece of sea pottery I found during one of my walks along a beach on St. Kitts. Previous Peace Corps Volunteers have suggested that a lot of St. Kitts' sea pottery came from discards used as ballast on ships plying the sugar trade from the Caribbean. The suggestion was that the sailing ships pulled up to a dock near a pottery plant in England, loaded up on pottery pieces before sailing to St. Kitts where it was then thrown overboard to allow for the loading of sugar, molasses and rum. Sounds fanciful but there is a lot of sea pottery found around here. So I have found a broken piece with a partial stamp on it. On the top, it ends with “an Bone China” and “in England” and underneath a partial wing and crown figure, “ED” and “UP”. Can anyone help? Thanks.
