Seeking History on Blue Garland

Hello All,

I'd like to start by saying I fell in love with the Blue Garland pattern as a young woman while married to my late husband. Unbeknown to myself, my older sister also has this china. After 18 years of being widowed I was fortunate enough to have found a wonderful man whom I married 3 years ago and as a wedding gift received the Johann Haviland Blue Garland China service for 16 as a wedding gift from my Mother. I also received a lot of excess pieces that had different back stamps, so I have been researching ever since. Here's what I know so far:

Johann (Jean) Haviland (Son of Charles & Grandson of David) china was produced from 1907 to 1924 then purchased by an Italian firm and then a Rosenthal conglomerate. Blue Garland has 3 variations; Coupe, Pompadour and Traditons. I have no date of production for the Coupe (1924?-1936?) but Pompadour was produced from 1937 through the 1960's with the Bavaria back stamp and Traditions was produced from 1970's through the 1980's for grocery store promotion with Thailand back stamp.

Any help that you can provide in verifying this info would be greatly appreciated. My set is Pompadour and there are pieces I am currently looking for which I know where where they are available. I was hoping for accurate history.

Thanx All!

Information on Johann Haviland
by: Blake Awbrey

When viewing the Haviland Family Tree, Johann Haviland unfortunately comes across as a rather devil may care man who had either little interest in the family business or was not the best of businessmen. John or Johann was one of three sons who descended from Charles Edward Haviland whose brother was Theodore, both of whom whose father was David Haviland the original founder with his brothers of Haviland Brothers & Co. in 1852. When the original company disolved, David Haviland along with his sons Theodore & Charles Edward formed Haviland & Co. in 1864. The descendents of the son Theodore continue the business to the present. Charles Edwards son, John or Johann, intially tried to do the same by setting up a factory in Bavaria, Germany in 1907 under the name Johann Haviland. In 1924, however, he sold the factory & the rights to the Johann Haviland name/trademark. Since then Johann Haviland has had many owner's who have used the Johann Haviland mark. Pricipal of these is Rosenthal. The Johann Haviland mark is now used by Waldershof Porzellanfabrik A.G. which is a sub company controlled by Rosenthal. Since 1924 pieces made with the mark Johann Haviland have actually had no connection with Haviland Porcelain.
I hope this helps. Yours, Blake
