Simple Oval/Circular Stamped Pottery Mark Query - wick over gland
Simple Oval/Circular Stamped Pottery Mark Query - wick over gland:- A pretty, quality pottery /ceramic Siamese cat figurine, 6 1/2 inches tall, hollow, found at a flea market, from the estate of a traveled, well to do American couple. The coloring obscures what looks like ----wick on top of the circle, and what looks like ---land (England) on the bottom of the circle.
Help?
Thanks,
Charlie

Simple Oval CircularStamped Pottery Mark Query - wick over gland
Hi Charlie
You are right to say the word "quality" as this lovely piece of artwork is by famous English maker Beswicks (the 'W' is silent, so it is actually pronounced "Bezics" - the typical quirky English way).
The pottery stamp mark actually says:-
Beswick
EnglandThe firm has a long and rich history, now being part of the Wedgwood group and famous for there Beatrix Potter figurines (Peter Rabbit etc etc).
James Wright Beswick was the founder in 1892, but his son John took up the mantle with a re-formed company in 1936 - John Beswick Ltd. You can read more by reading my entry in the online guide to china makers (find the content via any of the in-house search boxes dotted around the site).
This oval mark is likely from the 1950's although a very similar one was used by the older J W Beswick in the 1920's, particularly for flatback Staffordshire Dog reproduction figurines.
I emphasise the word 'oval' because, in the same period (post war production) they also used an exactly circular mark using the same words. Although your picture is faint, I can see it is the oval mark, not the circular one.
