Dear Sharon

What a curious item!!

There is no references anywhere I can find on your pottery mark. This makes your item interesting and rare. However, I did immediately recognize the Turkish/Muslim crescent and star together with the word "Stamboul" meaning the Turkish city of İstanbul.

I suggest this teapot was produced in the Turkish or Arab quarter of a large city in Austria and used for the brewing of mint tea. I would continue your research from there.

The city of Istanbul also referred to as 'Stamboul' was the former 'Byzantium' then also Constantinople. The city was dedicated to Diana, goddess of the hunt. The crescent is Diana's symbol. The star comes from the year of 330AD when Roman Emperor Constantine dedicated Constantinople to the Virgin Mary. Her symbol was the star, so this was added to the crescent.

On 29 May 29 1453, the Ottoman Turks, led by Sultan Mehmed II, invaded Constantinople with a force of 150000 men strong. Having taken over the administration of Constantinople, they adopted the crescent and star symbol as a sign of good fortune.

Good luck with your research.

On my China Replacement page, I show you how to search the internet properly.

I can answer some queries (bearing in mind I am an enthusiast and artisan NOT an expert antiquarian). So thank you for choosing to post your question on this site.

Best regards

Cookie Jar
by: Cathy

I was given one of your cookie jars from my husband's grandmother. It was an antique to her (she was born in 1899) and I'm trying to find out how old it is. Is white with gold filagre around the jar along with green rings that have the gold and small green rings with gold on lid. If you need a picture I can send it.
