I recently bought a teaset which has a 'Superior England' pottery mark on it, but cannot find any information about it.

Can anyone help?

Hi Anon

Not doing too well here are we? You left no name, and you didn't upload any photos??!!??

You mention a maker which needs taking about and this submission flags up exactly why we need photos to accompany any submission.

The best known maker using the brand 'Superior China' is in fact American not English. Syracuse China was founded in 1841 as the Farrar Pottery. A change of name to Empire Crockery Manufacturing Company happened in 1868 due to a buy-out.

In 1871 another change occurred when the company became known the as Onondaga Pottery Company (O.P. Co.). This firm was based in Geddes, New York and was known for making fine china, although it began by producing earthenwares early on.

Their market was largely hotels, restaurants, and railroad dining cars. Finally closing in 2009 after 138 years in operation, the production was moved abroad. Sound familiar?

Other brands used by Syracuse China include; Superior China, Canterbury, Old Ivory, Nature Study, Old Cathay, Palomino, Key Biscayne, Harmony and Golden Maize.

There is no English 'Superior England' brand I know of and a photo would show exactly what is written on the pottery mark - and whether the words 'Superior England' are a descriptive device or meant to indicate a maker.

In the back of my mind, there is a "Superior" pattern by Alfred Meakin Pottery of Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, and a photo would have shown whether this maker was a contender or not.
