Sutherland blue and white
Sutherland blue and white:- Hello, I have been given a number of blue and white cups, saucers, plates and cream jug. A number of these are marked 'Sutherland China Made in England' with a crown. The cream jug stands on little legs so I think might well be Victorian. The pattern is quite intense and is all blue, it looks like either a dog rose with a balcony with a vase on it or possibly apple blossom. The pieces have been hand gilded round rims etc.
I have not been able to find out anything about this, can anyone help.?
Brenda.

Hi Brenda
Many thanks for submitting, and hope you are finding the site generally useful. The mark photo as small and I am unable to read the mark which is not one shown in my books, but I am sure is genuine but not a standard mark.
I can't read the words, but normally they say something like "Sutherland China Made in England". If there is a variation on any, please write in to inform us of what it says.
After 1947 the standard mark included H & M (for Hudson & Middleton). Previously the firm was called William Hudson, and before that Middleton and Hudson.
The Sutherland Works was the name of the works and operated from 1892. Therefore, your set could date any time after that up until possibly around the 1930's. Unfortunately, without the mark showing in my books, I have no more accurate an idea than that.
In terms of value, I would never try to guess a price here in this forum, because it would be wrong to do so. If more knowledgeable contributors can help, I would urge them please go ahead (check out the comments section below for replies).
