Unmarked 13" Plaster Maquette Figurine of Two Babies:- I am having a difficult time in my research finding similar statues to help determine the age of this one. No markings to be found. I bought it at a yard sale from a 50 year old man who said it was his mother's.
It is very heavy weighing 7.25-lbs, measuring 13" tall and 7" wide. It appears to be of gypsum plaster (plaster of paris). I know that these type of statues are mass produce as decorative items.
But I have a feeling this one does not fall into that category.
It is an adorable piece and I was wondering if you or anyone in the forum felt this is a vintage piece or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Michelle

Hi Michelle
Thank you for sharing your research here. I am not sure how we are going to be able to helpas this is a little outside our remit here, but fascinating nonetheless.
All I can do is observe. First, this work is that of someone with a huge talent. This is not ordinary work from an amateur, this is a first class artist. To model like this is not easy. I speak as a professional sculptor who has worked for 2 decades for the most demanding companies on the planet. It is both the idea and the execution which is excellent.
Second, technically, if this is out of a mould (i.e. modelled in clay and then cast), it cannot be traditional plaster moulding as there are too many undercuts. It therefore has to be rubber, which is a more modern technology. The only alternative is the artist has sculpted the plaster and this is a one off.
Look for signs of tooling on the plaster which could indicate carving, or air bubbles indicating casting.
A very interesting find.
