X Pottery mark on Blue & White Old Pitcher which looks different and finer:- I just picked this up at an auction in Southern Vermont. I was looking at it and couldn't identify the "x" like mark on the bottom. I started to look at the pot a little closer and the artwork is rather fine and much different than any I've seen in a very long time. It's not completely balanced - it's a little off.
If you could help me that would be great.
Best Regards,
Natasha

X Pottery mark on Blue & White Old Pitcher which looks different and finer
Hi Natasha
Many thanks for submitting your interesting old jug. Welcome and I hope you are finding the site useful for your researching.
Now remember, I am not an expert myself, just a worker in the ceramics industry and a collector of information which I put on this site. However, I do work with a team of experts to whom I often send
visitor's queries for analysis.
I have sent several items to the experts which fit a similar description to your pitcher in that they have been blue & white, with a primitive X type marking, they have had fine detailed decoration and they are obviously an earthenware rather than vitreous porcelain or bone china.
The experts tend to come back with the analysis that these items are Early Staffordshire around early 1800's. In terms of value, they can be worth more than the average pitcher but this depends on condition. These are old items and not made of hard vitrified porcelain, so are prone to damage. I can see the cracking on yours from the photos, so this would reduce value.
However, it is a nice example with the lattice work base and fine unusual engraving work, so who knows, an expert might say this is a special one. I got an old blue and white vase through these forums a while ago with a similar 'x' pottery mark which was identified a Lowestoft ware and these are worth four figure sums. Not trying to get your hopes up, just get it checked out soonest. Make sure the expert knows about Lowestoft wares.
If anyone knows anything, please post below - it won't take long and we would all be grateful for your comments, thanks.
