M L Studio Potter's Mark

by Kim M.
(M L Studio Potter's Mark)

I'm very keen to identify this unusual mark. It looks like an 'M' with an 'L' laid over it on the left hand side and then a line around the outside of it. It is heavy pot with some crazing but otherwise perfect condition.

Grateful of any clues.

Kim

Hi Kim

I need help on this one because studio Pottery is not my bag. Also I didn't get whether you were US or UK based (such is the 'global' nature of the internet.

If you are from the US there are two notable studio potters that I could find with M L in their names.

They were:-

M.L. Owens of North State Pottery in Sanford

and

M.L. "Sonny" Moss of the Mud Creek Pottery, Calvert, Texas

I couldn't find any pictures of their marks though.

Hope this helps your research.

I own some M.L. Moss pottery from the guy in Calvert, Texas, and in 2003 that wasn't his mark...but the picture you show does look like his glazing technique! If you find him, I'm looking for him too. I want some more pieces!

Sonny Moss here...
When I sign my work it is always"M.L. Moss" and usually dated as well... Anything during my college years was signed "Mickey" and occasionally dated-78'-81'...
I do have a stamp that I like to use on larger work that I developed while at the University of N. Florida in the late 70s. It is a "sun-face" stamp and is usually applied as the last thing to the piece.
Many potters will develop a stamp like the one on this piece and I would bet that it is first and last initials... Look for a potter with last name starting with L. or M. depending on the design of the stamp.
Good luck with your search...
To find me on line type in Mud Creek Pottery and you can see some of the newer work...
Thanks for the intrest!
